#Beychella

With #Beychella fresh on everyone’s minds I figured it’d be appropriate to talk about Beyoncé. Beyoncé headlined the huge music festival Coachella this year. Due to her pregnancy with twins Sir and Rumi, Bey had to reschedule her initial headlining debut in 2017. It’s safe to say that it was well worth the wait, even though I and many others had to enjoy the show from our couches. Beyoncé is the first black woman to headline Coachella, which makes me consider how black men and women are still breaking barriers in 2018.

Beyoncé remains in the big leagues with musical icons like Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and Prince who’s careers explored much more than just their musical prowess. Beyoncé’s musical catalog displays the growth and maturity that she displays in her lyrics, execution, and philanthropic ways outside of the studio. Beyoncé represents black excellence, grace, and dedication. Watching Beyoncé’s life and career flourish as a fan allowed me to gain confidence in myself and my womanhood, which goes a long way. Through observation, I have been able to compile a list of life lessons that can be learned from Beyoncé.

1. Find Your Purpose

The most fulfilling thing that can be discovered in one’s life is finding your purpose. Ever since childhood, Beyoncé has participated in singing competitions and talent shows. The entertainment bug was within Miss Knowles-Carter since day one which has allowed her to become the star she is today. Finding your purpose in life will allow one to align their lives with a certain goal in mind. In the documentary “Life of 4,” Beyoncè details her transition from being managed by her father, Matthew Knowles, to managing her own career. This transition marked the beginning of a new era, an era where Beyoncè is unapologetically herself. We should all aspire to take our lives into our own hands and give it our all.

2. Hard Work Definitely Pays Off

Fulfilling your life dreams is unattainable if you don’t work hard. Hard work pays off when you’re focused on the things you need to do instead of the things that you want to do. When it comes to living a successful life, according to your standards, it’s impossible to do so without putting the work in. By viewing Beyoncè’s 20-year musical career, it’s inspiring to take note of the dedication she puts into her craft. Hard work is essential but it’s also important to keep a balance between work life and home life. Work hard, but don’t forget to keep yourself in mind and take breaks when you need to.

3. Family is Everything

Beyoncè’s critically acclaimed “Lemonade” album and visual film detailed the highs and lows of family, relationships, and marriage. Beyoncè’s marriage took a turn after years of infidelity, lies, and mistreatment. Through it all, Beyoncè experienced grief, depression, anger, acceptance, and forgiveness. These lessons were brought to life in the “Lemonade” film and through her lyrics.

On the song, “All Night,” Beyoncè describes the hardships of marriage.

‘They say true love’s the greatest weapon
To win the war caused by pain, pain
But every diamond has imperfections
But my love’s too pure to watch it chip away
Oh nothing real can be threatened
True love breathes salvation back into me
With every tear came redemption
And my torturer became my remedy”

Beyoncè’s familial patronage spans far beyond her marriage including the relationships she holds dear with her mother, sister, children, and other family members.

4. Privacy is Important

With fame comes an invasion of privacy. Even with normalcy, privacy is something that should be held onto. When people know everything about you and what you’ve experienced the things dearest to you can be used against you. Despite Beyoncè’s extreme status, she remains silent in the media unless she personally releases information. This should be the ideal for most people, as oversharing is a major trend in the social media age. It’s important to keep things you hold dear to yourself and your loved ones as it is not the world’s business.

5. “Pretty Hurts”

The first song off of Beyoncè’s self-titled album, “Pretty Hurts,” explains it all in the title alone. The song starts with:

“They say true love’s the greatest weapon
To win the war caused by pain, pain
But every diamond has imperfections
But my love’s too pure to watch it chip away
Oh nothing real can be threatened
True love breathes salvation back into me
With every tear came redemption
And my torturer became my remedy”

“Pretty Hurts” is an anthem that digs deep into insecurities that many struggles with. Societal pressures can be detrimental to one’s self-esteem and personal thoughts. “Pretty Hurts,” and other Beyoncè anthems, preach self-acceptance and loving oneself.

Listening to Beyoncè’s music throughout the years as well as watching her grow as an individual has been very inspiring for me and others alike. Bey’s transformation into the strong woman that she is paves a way for many to find peace within themselves and strive for personal success. Many celebrities in the limelight should use their platform to inspire and set a positive example.
